Bengaluru auto fares are set to rise from August 1, 2025, following a much-awaited decision by the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) of Bangalore Urban District. The revised fares within BBMP limits come after persistent demands from auto-rickshaw drivers for higher base fares.
According to the new rates, the minimum fare for the first two kilometres increases by 20%, from ₹30 to ₹36. Beyond that, each additional kilometre will now cost ₹18, up from the previous ₹15. Passengers travelling between 10 pm and 5 am will also pay a 50% night surcharge on the standard fares.
The RTA has directed all auto-rickshaw meters to be re-verified and stamped with updated fares by October 31. While this revision marks an official acknowledgment of drivers’ grievances, the drivers’ union has expressed disappointment, saying their demand for a ₹40 base fare and ₹20 per kilometre was not met.
For commuters, the move could offer relief if drivers adhere to meter rates, curbing arbitrary overcharging. However, dissatisfaction among drivers raises concerns that the perennial problem of fare negotiations may persist, burdening commuters.
The updated Bengaluru auto fares highlight the ongoing struggle to balance fair wages for drivers with affordable, transparent transport for residents.
